Norway missed out on a historic chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 defeat by England.
Erling Holland was unable to save Norway from the fight despite his great efforts in a thrilling game.
But former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has said Erling Holland was substituted in England’s World Cup defeat to Norway due to illness.
But fans around the world, along with ITV sports pundit Gary Neville, were left stunned when Holland, 25, was substituted midway through extra-time.
Cascarino, who played for the Republic of Ireland in the 1990 and 1994 tournaments, said he had received a text message confirming the Manchester City forward had the virus.
He told the newspaper “World Cup Weekend”“In the middle of the game, I got a message that Erling Holland was not feeling well, he was also sick.”
He continued. “He didn’t seem to be in good physical shape. He doesn’t touch the ball much anyway, but I was also surprised by his lack of energy.”
Norway’s preparations for a crucial showdown with England were affected when a virus broke out in the team’s camp.
This put many team members in a race against time to prove their right to participate.
Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard admitted that some of his teammates were feeling unwell in the days leading up to the game.
The head coach of the Norwegian national team, Stahl Solbakken, stated that he regretted not replacing Holland earlier.
He said, who angrily threw a bottle of water at the assistant coach after England’s equaliser. “It wasn’t a difficult decision to bring him on because he was finished… Maybe I should have brought him on ten minutes earlier.”
