TUDN’s “Los Maestros” witnessed one of the most tense moments after Carles Puyol and Ricardo La Volpe got into a heated discussion during the analysis of the 2026 World Cup semi-final matches.
and review”Sports newspaperBehind the scenes of the heated debate between La Volpe, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1978, and Puyol, who won the World Cup with Spain in 2010.
Talk naturally started of the upcoming clash between Spain and France before La Volpe sparked controversy by questioning the Spanish national team’s place in history, prompting the former Barcelona captain to hit back.
La Volpe said that “Matador” began to impose itself on the world stage only after winning the World Championship in South Africa in 2010, emphasizing: “What does Spain have to do with it? You appeared in 2010, and before that you weren’t there.”
But Puyol rejected this offer, reminding that the success of that generation started two years before the World Cup, when Spain won Euro-2008.
However, La Volpe stuck to his point and asked disgruntled. “World Champions, how many titles do you have?”
The Argentine coach also considered that Spain has long lived in the memories of that golden generation and that the 4-3-3 playing method is not a Spanish innovation, but was previously used by Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi years ago.
He added: “Since 2010, you have been living with an old history. Where was this history in 2014, and in 2018, and in 2022, only now a new generation has appeared with you?”
