Waze is getting an AI upgrade. Google is integrating its AI assistant, Gemini, into the driving software with the aim of allowing users to customize their journeys more.
Of the four new changes, only two are reported to affect Gemini. Waze says it’s updating its content, it was first released in 2024allowing drivers to use voice commands to describe traffic events and suggest map updates, such as road closures or old house numbers. In addition, Waze introduced Destination Search, enabling drivers to (again) use commands (such as, “Find me a coffee shop that’s open right now” or “Find me the nearest gas station with the lowest prices”) to find a destination.
This makes sense, given how better voice communication is with AI. For its non-AI features, Waze allows users to customize “less chat” so that drivers don’t have to share their music or listen to a podcast while using the app’s navigation options. Waze is also getting a Bike Route that combines the shortest two-wheeled routes with more accurate ETAs for better travel.
And finally, Waze will now provide route recommendations based on the user’s previous trips and using its local traffic information. So if you prefer highways to local roads, Waze will make sure you see the routes first.
Meanwhile, Google has stopped giving Waze a full AI overhaul. Google Maps, however, has been around get more information and more AI-drivenwhile the tech giant seems to be getting more control over its control tool.
