Morocco returned to their New Jersey base time and time again, despite taking them to Boston, Atlanta, Monterrey and Houston before losing to France in the quarterfinals.
The Belgians decided to base themselves in Renton, Washington, leaving about 4,000 miles of travel Ahead of their exit against Spain.
France’s tally is the lowest of any country in the tournament – with several teams eliminated after a total of three group matches.
Long-distance travel at the World Cup is nothing new. Brazil in 2014, Russia in 2018 and even South Africa in 2010 all covered significant distances.
The first 48-team World Cup, however, presented a different challenge. With matches taking place across three host countries and 16 cities, some teams spend weeks traveling across North America, while others stay within the same region.
England’s route illustrates that contrast better than most. Their journey has already surpassed the country’s total distance in other tournaments.
