State media reported that the United States launched a new attack on Iran and killed one person

Days of violence between the two countries continued after the United States launched a new attack on Iran on Sunday evening. According to Iranian state media, one person was killed and four others were injured in the attack in southwestern Iran.

Within hours of the new US attack, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced strikes on US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan and Bahrain.

The escalating violence has cast doubt on the future of the US-Iran interim deal signed in June amid conflicting claims over whether the Strait of Hormuz is open.

Iran says it has closed the key waterway until further notice, but the US insists it is open.

Oil prices rose in Asia on Monday morning. Brent crude was up 4 percent at $79.07 (£59.11) a barrel, while US crude gained 4.2 percent to $74.53.

Energy prices on global wholesale markets have fallen sharply in recent months as traders react to developments in the conflict.

Not long after the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, Tehran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) usually passes.

Despite recent gains, prices are well below the $120 per barrel Brent mark at the end of April.

On Sunday evening, Centcom announced another round of strikes against Iran, starting at 17:00 ET (22:00 BST).

It later revealed that dozens of Iranian military targets had been hit, including air defense systems, coastal radar sites and missile and drone capabilities.

U.S. forces are prepared to ensure freedom of navigation for commercial shipping despite Iran’s continued unprovoked raids, harassment, threats and arbitrary declarations, Centcom said.

The first Centcom announcement came minutes before Iranian state TV reported explosions in Sirik, Qeshm, Bandar Abbas and Jask.

Valiullah Hayati, Deputy Governor of Security and Law Enforcement of Khuzestan province, reported that “one person was martyred and four people were injured following the attack by the American enemy on Monday morning.”

The latest wave of US strikes comes after the US military struck 140 Iranian military targets, Centcom said late Saturday.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has responded to those attacks with wide-scale attacks on US military bases and allies in the region, marking an escalation of the war.

Among Iran’s targets are Qatar, a mediator in the ceasefire talks, which has not been attacked since April, and the United Arab Emirates, which has not been attacked since May. The BBC was approached by US Central Command (CENTCOM) for comment on the attack in Jordan.

The renewed fire threatens a temporary ceasefire signed last month, which aims to reopen tensions and eventually end the conflict permanently.

Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump said Iran’s attack meant the ceasefire was over, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused the US of violating the deal.

However, Trump said talks were still ongoing and mediators were trying to revive the process.

On Sunday, the US Central Command insisted that the coast was open, warning the US military to ensure its liberation.
