Walthamstow: Residents evacuated after fire in east London.

Around 100 firefighters were called to a blaze at houses, gardens, sheds and railway tracks in Walthamstow, east London.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said two evacuation centers were set up in the area for affected residents.

It said it first received more than 100 calls to the incident near Valentine Road and Shernhall Street just before 18:30 BST, with 20 fire engines and 125 firefighters attending.

In an update at 21:00, LFB said that although the cause of the fire is currently unknown, “crews are working hard to extinguish the fire as soon as possible.”

Firefighters advised people in the area to close their windows and doors due to the heavy smoke from the fire.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area including Wood Street, Shernhall Street and surrounding roads.

In response to the incident, the Weaver Overland Line was partially closed.

Walthamstow MP Stella Creasey tweeted on Sunday evening that “hundreds” of people had been affected by the fire.

“It makes you cry to see what our community has done,” she said, thanking local residents for the donations of food and water they brought to the rest centers.
