Tom Kim’s drought is over. The South Korean shed tears of joy as he produced a stunning final day result at the Genesis Scottish Open to claim his first title in three years.
Kim has struggled with form and confidence since his last win – as well as slipping down the world rankings – but his 17th place finish at the Renaissance Club served as a reminder of his talent with 64 wins from 17 races.
The 24-year-old won by two shots, with runner-up Min Woo Lee reeling from crowd favorite Bob McIntyre’s pursuit of a second home title and finishing four clear of Matt Fitzpatrick.
McIntyre, Lee and Fitzpatrick shared the lead after Sunday morning’s fog-marred third lap, but it was Kim who came from one behind to take the emphatic victory. He was the only player in the field to avoid a bogey in the fourth round.
“I really can’t wrap my mind around it,” an emotional Kim said. “It’s really special and I’m at a loss for words.
“I’ve had a really tough couple of years. I’ve had to taste a lot of that humble pie and really learn about myself and I’m still trying to grow, I’m still trying to learn.”
“I still have a long way to go. But I wanted to make this decision for the people who have been in my corner and fought with me and celebrated with me.”
He also secured a spot in next year’s Masters at Augusta National with a $1.2 million winning streak.
Rory McIlroy’s third-round 73 left the world number two with a huge deficit despite Kim closing in on the day’s lowest score of 64 under par.
Americans Michael Thorjornsen and Johnny Kiefer tied for seventh and third respectively when they make their Open Championship debuts next week, while the other spot at Royal Birkdale goes to Frenchman Victor Perez.
