Alongside hometown rival Alcaraz, Siner has dominated the men’s game for the past few seasons, and is expected to comfortably step up to the Grand Slam this year.
However, Sinner lost in the semi-finals of the Australian Open to Novak Djokovic before reaching the French Open on a 29-match winning streak before surprisingly falling in the second round at Roland Garros.
At Wimbledon, with Melbourne champion Alcaraz out for his second straight major with a wrist injury, Sinner reiterated why he is a true great of the game.
The fact that he’s been through a stressful fortnight – especially in the heat that’s plagued him before – is a testament to the work Sinner has done.
After his shock loss in Paris, Sinner withdrew from competitive action and did not compete in the lead-up to Wimbledon.
The decision to take physical and mental rest, as well as trying to find the cause of the problems in the heat, has yielded good results.
Sinner showed a level of vulnerability early in the tournament, needing five sets to get past Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, but has grown in confidence and quality over the fortnight.
The way he demolished Djokovic in the last four was a clear sign of his level – and he will need to be at his best on Sunday to beat Zverev.
Cener served well to limit Zverev to just one break point, defending his baseline aggressively to counter his opponent’s early attacks and taking chances clinically as they entered the final two sets.
