“We have another level to reach,” admitted captain Harry Kane as England bid to win their first World Cup since 1966.
The Three Lions needed extra time before beating Norway 2-1 on Saturday, with a semi-final clash against Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday (20:00 BST).
After the quarter finals, the boss Thomas Tuchel said he was unhappy. With England’s performance, the team was “unlucky”, saying “there were too many technical errors” and “they weren’t quick, they weren’t frequent enough”.
The 32-year-old Kane has scored six goals in this tournament and is England’s joint-top scorer with Jude Bellingham.
The captain was frustrated by Tuchel’s failure to replicate what his side had been doing in training.
“When he sees us training and sees our closeness and what we can do, especially with the players we have, the way we attack, our one-on-ones and skills, he wants to see a version of us,” Kane added.
He knows as well as anyone that it is not that easy, we are playing against good opponents and good teams.
“He’s trying to pull away from us and we know ourselves we can reach another level.
“We haven’t seen it yet, we’ve had glimpses of it. We had glimpses against Norway but we didn’t have the full control we wanted and I feel we can hold it.
We will play the best team in the world in the semi-finals, so the most exciting thing is that we are in the semi-finals and we feel we can still improve.
“But I think it’s really over the top. It’s showing us a lot of good things.”
