Murat Yaqi..taunted Hossam Hasan, then dressed as the victim against Argentina

The Dean’s curse hits Switzerland

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin has tasted the same trophy he mocked when his team lost to Argentina (1-3) in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup.

Yakin denied accusations by his Egyptian counterpart Hossam Hassan that Argentina was using arbitration courtesy and FIFA’s support during the 2026 World Cup, stressing that matches are decided in the green rectangle and not by media announcements.

Hard statements

In a press conference ahead of their quarter-final meeting with Argentina, Yakin slammed comments from Hossam Hassan, who accused FIFA of being biased against Argentina and trying to force Lionel Messi’s title amid widespread refereeing controversy following Egypt’s 3-2 defeat in the Round of 16.

In response to the question about the statements of the Egyptian coach, Yakin said: “I think the games are generally played fairly. Video surveillance technology can intervene and control everything,” he added.

A dramatic goodbye

Switzerland exited the World Cup amid widespread anger at the refereeing team, after Yakin and many of the team’s players criticized the decision to send off Brielle Embolo, stressing that the strike was the turning point in Argentina’s favour.

After the match, Yakin expressed his displeasure over the second yellow card, which the referee showed in the 72nd minute to Brielle Embolo’s face, as seen on the video technology screen.

Referee Silva Pinheiro had initially called for a foul on Leandro Paredes and booked the Argentinian before it became clear that there had been an error in player identification, necessitating the protocol.

After watching the shot, the referee ruled that there was no foul on Paredes and booked Embolo for allegedly falling, a decision that caused much anger among the Swiss national team.

“We were fined for a violation,” Yakin said after the game. “That card had no merit. I don’t understand it. It was a very ordinary hit and there was no ill intent. That decision was just unbelievable. I don’t agree with that at all. There was clear contact and I don’t understand how the referee and VAR came to that conclusion.

“I won’t say they had an advantage. We had a clean and open game and both teams played football. Football didn’t win today. We were punished for the mistake and it was a crucial moment that decided the outcome of the game. Now we can complain, but I have to congratulate Argentina.”

“The game plan worked again today. If we analyze the course of the game, we will find out that we were much better than the opponent. We came back with a result and the morale advantage was in our favour. We wanted to bring new players to the front line, and then the wrong decision happened. I don’t know why this rule was invented, but the players on my team were heroes.”

“I can’t understand that we are weakening like that. Embolo fought with all his strength and faced many challenges. That decision confused me and had no excuse. It’s sad. We missed a great opportunity and unfortunately our journey has come to an end. It’s unfortunate, but we can be proud of what we’ve presented. These are my real heroes.”
