What is that?
Eric Ciotti, the mayor of Nice, France, has called on FIFA to observe a moment of silence before the start of the 2026 World Cup semi-final between France and Spain, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 14, in honor of the victims of the terrorist attack that took place 10 years ago on the same day and 10 years ago, which killed six people.
Ciotti sent an official letter to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, asking for this symbolic tribute to be made on the tenth anniversary of the tragedy that shook France and the whole world, believing that such a gesture would have deep humanitarian implications.
In his letter to Infantino, the mayor of Nice said the minute’s silence before the match “will show the solidarity of the wider football family with the victims of terrorism and their loved ones”, underscoring the symbolic importance of the move as it coincides with the painful anniversary.
Ciotti added that the moment of silence would be observed by “the families of the victims, the survivors and the entire French people”, recalling the “values of brotherhood and unity embodied by football”, referring to the role that sport can play in expressing human solidarity against terrorism.
The Nice terrorist attack, which took place on July 14, 2016, is considered one of the deadliest attacks in modern French history, when a terrorist drove a heavy truck into a crowd of French National Day revelers on the famous Promenade des Anglais, killing 86 people and injuring hundreds.
