In one of the most inspiring stories of European football this season, FC Thun were crowned champions of the Swiss Superliga 2025-2026 despite the competition not yet reaching its final stages, benefiting from a 3-0 (0-3) defeat at St Gallen rivals Sion on Sunday night.
The achievement is historic by any standards as the small club, which was promoted to the top division only last season, managed to win the title with three rounds to go, writing a new chapter in the history of Swiss football and breaking the monopoly of Young Boys, Bern, Basel and Zürich in recent years.
Ton, who have one of the league’s smallest budgets, produced an exceptional season of performance and consistency as they topped the table with 14 points in Round 33 thanks to a cohesive group system and high fighting spirit that made them the dark horse of the competition.
Despite a series of fluctuating results in recent weeks, the big difference the team made in the first half of the season was enough to secure an early victory, an achievement that no fledgling club in the history of the Swiss league has achieved.
Coach Moro Luistrinelli, the architect of this success, expressed his delight at the achievements, saying in statements to the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation:
With this crowning, FC Thun open a new chapter in their history as they will compete in the Champions League for the first time next season, a move that represents the culmination of an exceptional journey for a club that started the season with survival ambitions and ended it as Swiss champions.
