2026 World Cup: Tuchel slams ‘lucky’ and ‘cowardly’ England – could ‘pure thinking’ be enough?

In the year

When the French judge Clement Turpin signaled the end of the competition Miami’s eventful quarterfinal victory; Thomas Tuchel’s players fell to their knees in celebration after taking Norway to extra time.

England fans were dancing in the stadium when Jude Bellingham, who scored twice, accidentally collided with Jordan Pickford in celebration, captain Harry Kane lined up with his teammates to acknowledge the thousands of fans who had made the long trip to Florida.

However, Tuchel was far from impressed.

“We were lucky,” he said after the quarter-final when Norway led, missed a great chance to make it 2-0, had a goal disallowed and also hit the coffee.

“We’ve made life very difficult for ourselves. The result is fantastic. We’re in the last four. It’s amazing but (I’m) not happy with the performance – in every way.

“We made life difficult with the way we played and the way we played – sloppy, too many technical errors, not fast enough, not frequent enough.”

Tuchel pointed out that was the one thing that helped England get through.

“This is pure thinking,” he said.

Asked about his manager’s comments and criticism, Bellingham, who struck in the 47th and 93rd minutes, said: “Yeah, well, whatever.

“It’s difficult there, it’s a tough shift. All the players have made a tough shift. My thoughts and appreciation go to our players who made a great shift.”

England have struggled to win this World Cup after beating Croatia 4-2 in their first group game.

Ghana beat Panama 2-0 before falling behind in the Democratic Republic of Congo to beat Mexico 3-2 in 10 games.

And Tuchel says he “loves” his team but expects more from them.

“(There’s) no relationship with my team,” he said.

“I’m in love with my heart, my players and my team, but we can play better, there’s a lot to improve.”

Do they need it?

Will character and attitude be enough as England look to win just their second World Cup – or will they need to improve?
