Argentina have not found an ideal solution at left-back since their star Angel Di Maria retired from international football two years ago.
The world champions are set to extend their dream of a second consecutive World Cup title when they face Switzerland in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup tomorrow, Sunday morning.
The last time Argentina played Switzerland was in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. That team, which managed to finish second behind Germany in the World Cup, went through some tough times before reaching the final.
According to the report published by the newspaper AS: This was one of those moments in the Round of 16 on Saturday night when Argentina faced the same Swiss team. And the savior that day, who scored a crucial stoppage-time goal, was the ‘guardian angel’ that manager Lionel Scalloni desperately needs at critical moments now, Di Maria.
Ever since he announced his retirement from Argentina’s national team after the last Copa America tournament, the position he left vacant on the left side of Argentina’s attack has continued to fluctuate.
Scaloni tried everything to find a solution. In this World Cup, he started with Thiago Almada, also putting Lo Celso, Julian and Nico Gonzalez in that area, and then, as a last resort, he pushed McAllister to the sidelines to reorganize the formation;
Di Maria played 145 matches for the Argentine national team, scoring 31 goals and 32 assists. He made his debut on 6 September 2008 and bid farewell to the national team as one of the historical legends after winning four major titles: the 2022 World Cup, the 2021 and 2024 Copa America and the 2022 Finalisma.
According to AS, Scaloni himself admitted that earlier they tried to convince him to return to the Argentina team. “We told Angel to come and say goodbye to his fans. He left and there was no way to convince him. We tried, but his decision is final. Her story is like a movie and it ended in the best way possible. it can be said that it was the right decision because he finished his career as a winner and one of the best footballers in our history.”
“Now in Rosario Central, Di Maria will watch the Argentina-Switzerland game from a completely different perspective than in 2014. He wore the savior’s garment then, as he has so many other times, but now he will suffer to see that there is no guaranteed alternative to replace him. You could feel it after he left.”
