Fifth T20 International, Southampton
England 257-3 (20 overs) Butler 131 (64), Brooke 95* (45); Credit 2-22
India 201-8 (20 overs): Kishan 56 (35), Verma 53 (25); Quran 3-36
England won by 56 runs, 4-0 in five matches.
Jos Buttler smashed a mammoth 131 to take England to the top of the world rankings with a 56-run win over India in the fifth T20I in Southampton.
Buttler followed a relatively barren run to his highest point in an impressive T20 career.
He shared England’s T20 record 233 runs at the stadium with captain Harry Brooke.
England’s third-highest T20 international total and highest against India proved too much for the tourists, 201-8 as the world champions slumped to a 4-0 defeat.
Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma both hit half-centuries but Shreyas Iyer’s side, who were shocking on the field, looked unlikely to secure a consolation victory and have now lost their number one ranking to their opponents.
This is the first time India have gone without a win in five T20 matches and a six-match losing streak in the last 20-over matches, after a shock defeat against Ireland in what was a tour to forget.
The two sides now meet in a five-match One Day International series starting at Edgbaston on Tuesday (11:00 BST).
