A Newport man is believed to have been shot by police

A man believed to be carrying a crossbow has been shot dead by police in South Wales.

Gwent Police said they were called to an address in St Edward Street, Newport at around 11.55pm on Friday following reports of threatening behaviour, where a man was seen with what was believed to be a crossbow.

A 21-year-old Newport man was shot by police and taken to hospital. He remains in stable condition.

Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McClain said the incident was an “isolated incident” and police were not looking for anyone else.

“While reports of crime involving guns and firearms in Gwent are rare, we take all reports of this nature seriously and respond professionally and proportionately based on the level of risk on the information received,” he said.

Gwent Police said it had referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
