England’s Lottie Wade slipped off the top of the leaderboard at the Evian Championship as Aaron Rew carded the lowest round in major championship history.

South Korea’s Ryu shot 11-under 60 in East of France on Saturday to thrust himself into contention, taking him to 19-under for the tournament and giving him a three-shot lead.

Aki trails Eiyi Ryu by three strokes and his Japanese compatriot Mao Saigo four shots further back, tied with Canada’s Brooke Henderson at 12 under.

Ryu nearly finished with a 59 but his 30-foot putt came up just short for an eagle on the par-five 18th hole.

The 25-year-old still finished with his fourth birdie in his last five holes at Evian but was unaware he was on the brink of a sub-60 round.

She said: “After the putt, I counted my score with my caddy… ‘Oh my God, 11-under par today’. It was amazing. I’m so happy now.”

Ryu recorded nine birdies and an eagle on the par-four sixth hole as she claimed her record round, surpassing Hyo Juo Kim (2014), Jeong-eun Lee6 and Leona Maguire (both 2021), who all shot 61 at Evian.

The event is the fourth of five majors in women’s golf this year and Riou will win her second in three weeks after winning the Women’s PGA Championship in Minnesota.

“Yes, it’s a wonderful dream,” she said. “I just want it to be true, but we have one more day and Aki is a very good player. Everyone is very good.”

EY had eight birdies to stay in contention against two bogeys while Henderson’s round of 64 included eagles on the seventh and 15th holes.
