Hundreds of thousands migrated like barrels of Bavi Storm to China | Weather News

Super Typhoon Bavi has been downgraded but remains dangerous, meteorologists say.

More than 600,000 people were evacuated from their homes in China as Typhoon Bavi barreled toward the country after hitting Japan’s Sakishima Islands and eating into northern Taiwan.

Chinese officials said on Saturday more than half a million people had been evacuated in eastern Zhejiang and another 100,000 in nearby Fujian province.

Bavi is expected to make landfall in Wenzhou, a populous city in Zhejiang, early Sunday morning, and is expected to bring heavy rain.

Although it has weakened significantly since it hit the US Pacific Islands on Monday and tracked northwest, Storm Bavi remains a serious threat due to the amount of moisture it is carrying in its rain bands.

In China, the National Weather Service issued an orange typhoon warning – the second-highest level of four. Hundreds of flights have been grounded, rail services have been reduced, and many schools and cruises have been suspended.

“I’m a little worried, but I think it will be fine,” Wenzhou resident Huang Xinghuan, 50, told Reuters as he shopped at a floating market before it closed before the typhoon hit.

His family, he said, saved water for about two to three days, and food was guaranteed.

He added: “We had a storm.

In Ningde city, Fujian province, more than 3,700 people were evacuated from high-risk areas by Friday evening, the official Xinhua news agency reported. The authorities there have deployed more than 17,000 emergency workers.

Meanwhile, southern China’s Hainan and Guangxi regions are still reeling from Tropical Storm Maysak earlier this week. At least 39 people have died in the city of Nanning, where a burst dam sent torrents of water into the streets.

Philippines records death, Taiwan flees injured

At least 17 people have been killed in the Philippines after heavy rains brought by the southwest typhoon and worsened by the impact of Bavi triggered landslides on Friday night.

In Taiwan, where Bavi is expected to sweep through on Saturday according to the island’s Central Weather Administration, at least 36 people have been injured – mostly after riding motorcycles on slippery roads in the storm and wind.

About 14,210 people had been evacuated from the island by Saturday morning, mostly in Taichung city and Hualien province. Many schools, offices and restaurants in Taiwan are closed.

Meanwhile, more than 200 flights were grounded across Japan as authorities in southern Okinawa warned of high tides, strong winds and typhoons. Strong winds and rain have hit the southern island of Sakishima – controlled under Okinawa – since Friday.
