Jamie Carragher says Erling Haaland will go down as “the greatest goalscorer of all time” – but he wants to keep Harry Kane in his squad.
Haaland’s Norway face Kane’s England in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday in a game that pits two of the tournament’s top strikers against each other.
however, Sky Sports Pundit Carragher says the Three Lions captain is ahead of Haaland for Kane because of his all-round contribution.
“I’d have to say Kane,” Carragher said Sky Sports News When asked to sort between pairs. “I love Harry Kane. I think Harry Kane has more to his game than Erling Haaland.”
However, Carragher was impressed with Haaland’s praise, who looks set to hit 1,000 goals in his career. The 25-year-old already has 379 to his name, including 62 in 54 matches for his country.
“I actually think Erling Haaland, when he finishes his career, will be remembered as the greatest goalscorer of all time,” Carragher said.
“He’s probably the best goalscorer we’ve seen in English football at the moment.
“I know (Cristiano) Ronaldo is going to score 1,000 goals in his career, I think Haaland will do it himself. He is just an absolute goal machine. His record at international level separates Lionel Messi and Ronaldo after 50 or 60 matches.
“He’s a madman, he’s a phenomenon, we should be delighted that we can see him week in and week out in the Premier League, he’s a superstar.”
Haaland has scored in each of his last 14 competitive games for Norway, scoring 27 goals during that run. So how will England stop him?
“I think some of England’s centre-backs have done well against him. Dan Byrne and Egeri Konsa. He’s scored a couple of goals against Jordan Pickford, so it might not be good,” said Carragher.
“But with Haaland it’s a difficult one because he’s not in the game very often.
“He is absolutely devastating in the penalty box, and Gabriel, who has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League these past three or four seasons, was absolutely bullied by Haaland in Norway’s game against Brazil.
“He comes alive when the ball is in the box. His physicality, his height, even his speed when he runs into something is breathtaking. I’m not sure you can stop him physically. He’s a man-mountain, he throws people around the football field.”
Carragher is tipping a narrow 2-1 win for England against Norway – but has warned Thomas Tuchel’s side not to underestimate their opponents in Miami, explaining there is more to them than Haaland’s goals.
“I think Norway will be a tougher proposition than a lot of people think,” Carragher said.
“I saw them against Brazil and I thought they were fantastic. They deserved to win that game. They dominated Brazil’s possession in the second half.
“They have some really good players, but this is a game we can win.”
