Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and two figures who have been heavily involved in Middle East talks — special envoy Steve Wittkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner — are expected to lead the talks, which are expected to take place in Oman on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a Qatari delegation traveled to Iran on Friday to ease tensions and ease travel through the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to resume ‘talks,'” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social earlier on Friday.
“We agreed to do it, but the United States has definitely said unequivocally that the ceasefire is over!”
There were no new attacks on Friday after the Gulf War flared earlier this week, the worst exchange of fire between the US and Iran since the two countries signed an interim accord in June.
Three ships were hit while using the US-led route through Omani waters. Iran repeatedly says the only “safe” passage is a separate route through its waters.
General progress was made last month when the United States and Iran agreed to a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at extending the ceasefire and ending hostilities “on all fronts”.
As part of the agreement, Iran and Oman must negotiate with other Gulf countries to “determine the future of governance and maritime services” on the coast.
During the conflict, Iran sought to assert its sovereignty over the coast, establishing a “Persian Gulf Coastal Authority” that it said would administer “safe passage”.
According to Iran’s Fars news agency, tensions will finally be managed by Iran in cooperation with Oman under a new deal with the US.
