Was Assassin’s Creed Black Flag worth the 13-year wait?

But despite all the new assets and graphics, there is no escaping the fact that it is based on the game that was first released in 2013.

Ubisoft had to make a lot of calls about what to reuse and change from the beginning.

Welsh actor Matt Ryan’s performance is excellent, but some of the animations from the first game – such as characters repeatedly biting and spitting cork out of bottles – might have been better left in the past.

The game suffers from a very common problem in modern games: it holds your hand too much.

At its worst, at one point a character gave me less than 10 seconds to figure out a puzzle before spitting out the solution.

The combat also clearly draws from the modern Assassin’s Creed games, but retains some of the time-based combat of the original.

It’s a good marriage between the two, although it’s a shame some things weren’t recreated – like the ability to use your assassin’s hidden knives in combat.

That combination of modern and classic combat is a good example of where the game shines. And if Ubisoft uses this as a template, we could be set to see many more remakes of the series in the future.

So maybe the question is not worth the wait, but how long should we wait for the next one?
