Without new data or clear recommendations, an advisory group appointed by anti-vaccine health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. provide federal guidelines for combining shots against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chicken pox). An analysis published today and independent researchers do work that advisers ignored before the vote, and, it shows how harmful the decision is to vulnerable US children.
The election last fall followed difficult negotiations with the Kennedy’s questionable qualified adviserswho make up the Advisory Committee on Immunization (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Notably, their impromptu evaluation of the MMRV vaccine did not include the decision-making process that ACIP had previously used to critically evaluate what the change would mean for US children in practice — including important questions, such as which children would be affected.
However, the decision meant that health insurers would no longer be required to cover the vaccine, known as MMRV. It also meant that the shooting would they are no longer available through the federal program which immunizes nearly half of America’s children, mostly from low-income families.
