Sinner has made a spectacular comeback in south west London in the last two weeks, after suffering from the defeat of fear – only the third of the year – in the second round of the French Open against Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina.

There was a lot of low-key action in the top-flight, with a large section of the crowd scrambling to reclaim their seats after home champion Arthur Fery’s loss to Zverev in the other semifinal.

But Sinner was all business, breaking the ninth game before serving for the first set.

Djokovic managed to fend off two points in five games of the second set.

But there was only a brief respite for the seventh seed as Sinner stormed to a 4-3 lead before two brutal forehands saw him move one set from the final.

Djokovic held serve in the first game of the third set, allowing the Sinner to win in just two hours and 20 minutes, saving the break he faced.
