Italian world number one Yannick Siner reached his first career Wimbledon final with a crushing 3-set (6-4), (6-4), (6-4) semi-final win over Serbia’s Novak Djokovic on Center Court at the All England Club.
Sinner was in strong control of the match from the first moments, relying on his powerful forehands (14 aces) and crushing forehands, giving the former Wimbledon champion no real chance to get back into the game.
The match ended Djokovic’s bid for his 25th Grand Slam title. The Serbian player suffered from the brutality of the confrontation against the young Italian player, who did not give him a single breath during the three sets.
In the final scheduled for next Sunday, Siner will face Alexander Zverev of Germany, who in turn qualified for the other semi-final after a convincing victory over Britain’s Arthur Ferry, in a match in which the German showed surprising level and high confidence.
This final match is Sinner’s golden opportunity to win his second Grand Slam title this season after winning the Australian Open, putting him in direct competition with three-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, the leader of a new generation of tennis.
If he wins the title, Sinner will move one step closer to Alcaraz’s tally of major tournaments, after he missed a golden opportunity in the last Roland Garros final.
On the other hand, the final holds special significance for Zverev, who by reaching the final secured his rise to second place in the world rankings as of next month, overtaking Alcaraz, who will drop to third place.
The clash between Sinner and Zverev is one of the most famous finals of the new generation, as two of the world’s best players currently meet for the most prestigious title in world tennis, away from the traditional Alcaraz and Djokovic pairing that has dominated the scene in recent years.
