Lebanese authorities have granted bail to Fadel Shaker, the pop star accused of joining a terrorist group, who spent months in prison on charges of being part of a gang and money laundering.

Judging officials said he paid 500 million Lebanese pounds ($5,500) and was released on Wednesday after being questioned on several charges. These include being in the armed forces, donating money to armed groups, embezzling money – and, most importantly, participating in the armed forces. Who is Fadel Shaker?

The fifty-seven-year-old Lebanese grew up, according to media reports, near the Ain al-Hilweh camp for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.

In 1998, he released Wallah Zaman, his first album of eight songs, which was followed by albums over the next decade.

Known as the “prince of love”, he became very popular in the Arab world. Big hits like ‘Ya Ghayeb’ made him popular in the region and he regularly performed at music festivals.

In 2012, he shocked fans by quitting his music career for religious reasons – saying it was “wrong” – and has been accused of joining a militant group led by a hardline Sunni leader. Ahmed al-Asir.

Shaker exchanged his popular love songs for religious songs, which he performed at al-Assir support meetings.

Al-Assir was famous for his harsh words against the regime in Syria, where there was a civil war, and for criticizing Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shia group, for cooperating with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

In 2013, 18 Lebanese soldiers and between 25 and 40 al-Assir soldiers were killed in fighting in the Abra neighborhood of Sidon. al-Assir’s henchmen opened fire on the army post and fighting continued throughout the night.

What happened to him?

Shaker was tested absent in 2020 when a Lebanese military court sentenced him to 22 years in prison. This included 15 years of hard labor. “Participation in terrorist attacks, and his knowledge of the matter by providing support to them”, the National News Agency of Lebanon said at the time. It also included seven years in prison for giving money to the al-Assir group.

Although Shaker admits that he was a supporter of al-Assir, he denies taking part in the Sidon conflict.

Al-Assir, who was arrested in 2015 while trying to flee Lebanon, was sentenced to death in 2017, and sentenced to 20 years of hard labor in 2021.

Last October, Shaker surrendered to the police. Authorities vacated previous convictions after he surrendered, and Shaker went on trial in January. Negotiations are understood to be ongoing.

According to four judicial officials who spoke to the AP, Shaker left the military base near Beirut and moved into a rented house.

Four cases against him are pending, law enforcement officials said. These are understood to include allegations of involvement in the formation of an army, financing of armed groups and money laundering.
