The man shot by ICE in Houston was not the intended target, DHS says

The incident sparked protests in Houston on Wednesday, with four Democratic members of Congress calling for an independent investigation into Salgado’s death.

Deputies Sylvia Garcia, Al Green, Lizzie Fletcher and Christian Menefiorote wrote in a letter to DHS that the incident “is not the first time ICE agents have used unnecessary, deadly force.”

Senator Markwayne Mullin, the head of the Department of Homeland Security, urged them not to forget the cases of Renee Goode and Alex Pretty, US citizens who were killed by federal agents in Minneapolis in January.

“Instead of answers and accountability, DHS and ICE issued a statement echoing the same stories we’ve heard before, that the arrest, vehicle seizure and fatal shooting were the result of self-defense,” they wrote Tuesday, referring to Salgado’s shooting.

Following the attack, the Mexican government said it would file criminal charges following the deaths of more than a dozen of its citizens in US prisons.

Mexican Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco said 14 Mexicans were in ICE custody and three others died during ICE’s “detention campaign.”

Velasco said he was instructed by Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to file the complaint, and that his goal was to have the deaths or operations of Mexican nationals in ICE custody investigated “as criminal cases.”
