Ona Butle transfer news: Arsenal have signed the Spain defender to a long-term deal

Arsenal have signed Spain international Ona Butle on a free transfer following his exit from Barcelona.

It is understood Buttle has signed a four-year deal with an option to extend for a further year.

The 27-year-old, widely regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world, left Barcelona in May after helping them win the Champions League.

During his three-year spell in Spain, Buttle made 114 appearances as Barcelona won three consecutive league titles and two European Cups.

Buttle started 2025 in their Champions League final defeat to Arsenal.

“Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can’t wait to experience the joy of playing with so many great players in front of our fans at the Emirates Stadium,” Battle said.

“I want to win trophies and I think this is the right place to achieve it.”

Butle graduated from Barcelona’s academy before making his senior debut for Madrid CFF in 2017.

He earned regular first-team football at Spanish top-flight side Levante before joining Manchester United in 2020.

The defender made 77 appearances for United before returning to Barcelona as an established Spain international.

Buttle played 76 times for Spain and was part of the team that won the World Cup in 2023 and finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025.

He was named in FIFA’s best XI for 2024 and 2025 and is believed to have signed a pre-contract agreement to join Arsenal earlier this year.

Arsenal manager Rene Slagers said: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring him to the club.”

“He is a very experienced full back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. He is a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”

“He is a proven winner with an appetite to add more trophies. We are delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal.”

Buttle will wear Arsenal’s number 22 shirt.
