TThe second volume in Signum’s survey of Mahler’s music focuses on the three volumes of Lieder und Gesänge that the composer worked on in his 20s, concluding the album with his first vocal masterpiece, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen.
These original costumes are individual, often whimsical and always fun. Joseph Middleton, whose natural flow and vocal support are matched by a wide variety of recordings from the piano, has gathered many musicians. Sophie Rennert opens with Frühlingsmorgen, her full mezzo and rich voice bringing this vibrant Viennese gem to life. He is equally seductive in Ich ging mit Lust durch einen grünen Wald, one of Mahler’s most brilliant compositions. Ablösung im Sommer, a wonderful celebration of a cuckoo that has fallen to the ground, is given a fantastic performance by Katharina Konradi.
If Mauro Peter’s tenor feels energetic in the run of Scheiden und Meiden, he is more affected in Zu Straßburg auf der Schanz, a voice that is enlivened by Middleton’s orchestral music. Finally, Simon Keenlyside is an honorable choice for Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. Its placement in Mahler’s text brings a great depth to these haunting compositions, through the sometimes difficult to hear.
