In the year 2026 World Cup: Erling Haaland pressures Norway into a major tournament for the first time in 26 years.

England coach Gareth Southgate

“With players like him, they are clear about where they want to play,” Southgate said. “He feels loyal to the country he plays for now and you always have a lot of respect for him.”

Haaland was born in Leeds – where his father Alf-Inge is still based. He left Leeds United for Manchester City in 2000.

After his father retired due to injury, the family moved to Brien, Norway three years later.

The young Haaland’s talent was spotted early on and he moved quickly through the youth ranks at Bruyne before signing for Molde, managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, in 2017.

He helped turn Haaland into an attacking force and has often spoken of the former player he regrets not being able to sign as Manchester United manager.

The young striker caught the eye during his time at Red Bull Salzburg before a spell at Borussia Dortmund – where he struck up a close friendship with England’s Jude Bellingham – really announced him on the world stage.

He moved to Manchester City in 2022 – a move many felt was inevitable given his father’s history and his own love of English football.

But despite his rapid rise to stardom, Haaland has continued to return frequently to Norway, where he has many assets.

Norwegian football journalist Andreas Korsund told BBC Sport: “Despite Holland’s international star status, he is the same person.”

“He knows exactly where he comes from and regularly visits his small hometown in Rogaland. He is incredibly proud of his roots and presents himself to the Norwegian press when he represents his country.”

Haaland has discussed his desire to farm in his homeland when he retires and is often seen walking around Oslo, where he lives in an apartment.

it has:: It entered the Norwegian Viking history And he is very proud to represent his country, leading his teammates in Viking Row after defeating Brazil.

It’s his connection to his heritage that makes Braut Haaland sport his full title on the back of his national shirt – Braut is his mother’s maiden name and combining it with his father’s name is Norwegian tradition.

“Haaland means everything to Norway,” Korsund says.

“He has become an unprecedented superstar in the world’s biggest sport. For a country of over 5.5 million people to produce one of the absolute best footballers on the planet is a big deal.”
