The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) warned that refugees crossing the northern coast of Venezuela, an area hit hard by the earthquakes, are at risk of disease due to lack of clean water and regular medical care.

“In the coming weeks, serious health risks may arise not only because of the injuries caused by the earthquakes, but also because of the disruption of medical services, overcrowded conditions, lack of water and sanitation and reduced access to vaccinations and medical care,” said PAHO director, Jarbas Barbosa.

The organization is working with the Venezuelan Ministry of Health to improve access to vaccinations and to monitor any respiratory or digestive diseases, especially in the shelters that have been built for those who have lost their homes.

The United Nations has launched an appeal for $300 million to help the 1.3 million people in need in Venezuela.

PAHO urged immediate reimbursement of the remaining $15 million in emergency aid requests to repair damaged hospitals and maintain sanitation in refugee camps to prevent emergencies.
