Nations Championship: Wales aim to topple Argentina

Tandy admits the challenge of traveling to play the Pumas represents a high level for his squad, with Wales ranked 11th in the world and Argentina currently ranked seventh.

“It’s a great opportunity to see how far our development has come and play a world-class team in their own backyard,” said Tandy.

“We know it’s a big challenge for us. There’s going to be a lot of emotion, they’re going to be at home, it’s going to be hostile.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for us to take on. The boys are used to playing in hostile environments but this weekend will probably be a bit more intense.

“It will be a great experience but ultimately it’s making sure we can stay connected as a team on that field because we have to survive moments.

“When we have the opportunity to put ourselves in the game, it’s about making sure we’re ruthless.”

Preparation time for Tandy’s side was limited as the party was split into two consecutive flights from London Heathrow to Buenos Aires, a journey that spanned 7,000 miles, took 18 hours and crossed four time zones.

That left just one full training day with the full squad on Wednesday and another two-hour flight from the Argentine capital to San Juan the following day.

“It’s a good test and there’s no excuse,” Tandy said. “It’s good for building character and bonding us as a team.

“I love this tour and it can bring out the best in you.”
