A federal judge has reluctantly approved a $1.5 million settlement between Elon Musk and the Trump administration despite raising concerns over the terms of the agreement, which allows Musk to get off lightly for allegedly defrauding investors on Twitter.
In a system approving the agreement, US District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan said that he “has serious doubts about the settlement” between Musk and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and described “red flags” in the SEC’s decision making. This is not surprising because he he was asked before whether the contract is tainted by corruption. But there are high barriers to entry, and the conditions do not meet that “large seat,” he wrote yesterday.
“This means that the Court must accept the decision of the Parties,” said Sooknanan, a Biden appointee. “Whether the Executive Branch (through the SEC) has done enough to hold Mr. Musk accountable for his violations, like many others, is up to our citizens to decide at the ballot box.”
