Karolina Muchova saves a match point before reaching her first Wimbledon final with a win over Coco Gauff.
Muchova started the semi-final match strongly, but Gauff hit back, and they were unable to break away in a high-quality third set.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Gauff came from 4-1 down to break a break point and have a match point on serve.
Muchova lost her first match point but it was she who finally stood victorious with a stunning 6-2 1-6 7-6 (12-10) win on Center Court.
The Czech 10th seed had reached four major semifinals before Thursday’s match against Gauff, but had only made the final once – at the 2023 French Open, where she was beaten in three games by Iga Svitek.
But Muchova will get another shot at Grand Slam glory on Saturday, where she will face compatriot Linda Noskova or Ukraine’s 12th seed Marta Ktuk.
After her victory, Muchova buried her face in a towel, taking a moment to absorb the enormity of her achievement.
“It was nerve-wracking. I didn’t even know what to say, I was shaking and trying to get in,” said the 29-year-old.
“Honestly, it was a huge fight. It was a rollercoaster – match point and then match point down. You don’t have time to think.”
Muchova became the third Czech player to reach the All England Club women’s singles final in three years and will be hoping to emulate the feats of Marketa Vondrosova and Barbora Krejcikova in 2023 and 2024.
