The Atlas Lions show their claws with the confidence of their undefeated streak
Morocco will enter their highly-anticipated clash with France in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday night carrying more than just a place in the semi-finals as the pages of history give them further reason to believe in their ability to topple one of the title’s most prominent contenders.
Although the French national team has a strong record in the tournament, the “Roosters” have proven more than once that they are not immune to surprises from African teams, which can give the “Atlas Lions” a big morale boost ahead of the expected confrontation.
The 21st Century World Cup saw France suffer three defeats against African teams, compared to the Roosters’ six defeats in the same period, a remarkable tally for one of the giants of world football, according to statistics.Squawka:“.
The first blow came in the 2002 World Cup opener, when Senegal beat France with a penalty kick in one of the most famous upsets in the tournament’s history.
The scene was repeated in 2010 when France lost 2-1 to South Africa, exiting the tournament at the group stage in one of their worst performances.
The third setback came in a goalless draw against Tunisia at the 2022 World Cup, despite France having already guaranteed their place in the round of 16.
76 years of waiting… Will Morocco and Argentina break the rules of the World Cup?
Coach Mohamed Wehbe’s side will hope to draw inspiration from these historic precedents to add Morocco’s name to the list of African teams that have managed to topple France on the world stage.
The Atlas Lions are aware that the task will not be easy for the team aiming for a third consecutive semi-final, but the long-term positive results of Morocco (34 unbeaten matches in all competitions), in addition to the experience gained by the players in recent games, give the team a lot of confidence ahead of the clash.
In their last 13 World Cup matches, Morocco have lost just twice, both at the 2022 World Cup, in the semi-finals against France and in the third-place match against Croatia.
Morocco are alone in carrying the African continent’s hopes after all other teams crashed out of the current edition.
Morocco are also looking to repeat their 2022 World Cup feat when they became the first African team to reach the semi-finals, with the dream of writing a new chapter in the history of African football by continuing their journey to the title.
