30 years after a mother and daughter were beaten to death, new DNA samples are taken from a man convicted of a double murder.
The bodies of Dr Lynne Russell, 45, and her six-year-old daughter, Megan, were found in Chillon, Kent, on July 9, 1996. Megan’s sister, Josie Russell, suffered severe head injuries.
Following the murder, Josie returns to live with her father in Gwynedd, where she works as an artist.
Michael Stone was given three life sentences, but the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is re-examining the evidence after killer Levi Belfield admitted the murder.
The DNA will be taken from the stone on Thursday.
Stone’s lawyer, Paul Bacon, said he was “very hopeful” that the CCRC review and DNA testing would “eventually lead to the discovery of the real culprit”.
“Then we hope to bring Michael to the appeals court and get his freedom after all these years in prison,” he said.
