London City Lionesses have completed the landmark signing of free agent Alexia Putellas following his departure from Barcelona.
Putellas left the Catalonia club in May after 14 trophy-laden years, a teenager he joined for unprecedented success domestically and in Europe.
The World Cup champion, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, is widely regarded as one of the best female players in the game. He is said to be the favorite to add a third Ballon d’Or to his collection at this year’s ceremony in October.
Speaking about the move, Putelas said: “I am thrilled to begin this new chapter with the London City Lionesses.
“The club’s ambition and growing commitment as a women-only independent club resonated deeply with me.
“I look forward to making an impact on the pitch while challenging for the title. On the pitch, building on my passion for youth development, I am equally excited to work with Michelle (Kang) to promote women’s football in England and on the global stage.”
London City owner Kang said: “Alexia Putellas embodies the pinnacle of talent, dedication and vision in women’s football.
“Her decision to join our independent, women-first club is a strong endorsement of what we are building in the City of London.”
Putellas’ capture marks another important step in the development of fast-rising London City, who also landed former England international goalkeeper Mary Earps earlier this summer.
Putelas, now 32, joins a raft of high-profile names already on the Kang-led enterprise’s books, including French sensation Grace Gaioro and Swedish stalwart Kosovar Aslani.
London City have spent just one season in the WSL so far, finishing sixth in 2025/26 under Spanish coach Eder Maestre. The arrival of Putellas is expected to provide a rapid boost to the top-flight newcomers, while also adding significantly to the WSL’s status.
Analysis from Sky Sports News ‘Anton Tolui’:
London City Mane brought one of the biggest names in the history of the game to Lions via trade. Putellas led Barcelona to their fourth Champions League this year and was named the competition’s player of the year.
He returned to the peak of his powers to restore Barcelona’s position as Europe’s powerhouse club, with his form particularly important following the injury to teammate Aitana Banmati.
Putellas is also one of the most recognizable and marketable faces in the game. Her latest ad for a popular crisp brand – you know the one – stars her alongside David Beckham, Thierry Henry and Steve Carell.
The fact that the Lions are offering him more money than the reigning European champions shows that the club are not messing around. Edder Maestre confirmed to me as recently as May that the club’s ambitions extend to “Champions League dreams”.
These are not just flights of fancy; They are bankrolled by Michelle Kang’s Treasury. It looks like a Galacticos project based on the humble Bromley.
Analysis by Sky Sports’ Laura Hunter:
I had the privilege of watching Alexia Putellas play live for Barcelona Classico At the Camp Nou in April. You will note tone of the piece. Admirably effective.
Undoubtedly Putellas is the real deal, a joy to watch. It’s hard to describe his control and impact on games without first-hand witnessing. Even at the age of 32, he has what he calls a streetwise right And I hope he brings that unique authenticity to the WSL for as long as he stays.
The English top flight is undoubtedly more demanding, even more intense, than Spain’s domestic league. But he adapts quickly. If this is a sign of things to come for London City, then the rivals should be under no illusions about their intentions.
Skeptics may question the scale of investment, rightly so, and debate the financial disparity between the City of London and its direct competitors. But without ambitious investors, how does the game reach new heights?
Goalkeeper Yorps will be a new teammate of Putellas next season, and has tipped the playmaker to win a third Ballon d’Or award after another show-stopping year for Barcelona and Spain.
she said Sky Sports News: “It’s really exciting to play with so many great players and Alexia’s signing is huge for the club. It shows their intent and he’s a great player. I think he’ll be good for the Ballon d’Or this year.
“I’ve had the privilege of playing with some incredible players over the years so I’m really looking forward to it. I’m sure he’s going to challenge me in training.
“I can’t wait and hope we can work very well together. London City are building an exciting squad so it’s exciting to be a part of it.”
