The blockbuster heavyweight clash between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua is set to take place at Wembley Stadium at 1am.
Turki Alalsikh, who is organizing the all-British fight, said on Monday that he wanted to stage the fight at a time that worked for a global audience and was in talks with London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan to get permission to host the late-night fight in the capital.
Khan responded to Alalsikh’s comments that he “supported the ambition” to fight in London, before Alalsikh posted on social media that he had so far been told that a later start time was “not possible”.
Meanwhile Brent Council, the local authority which will be involved in granting approval, said an extension to Wembley’s current 11pm curfew would need to be assessed by the Stadium Safety Advisory Group, which is part of the council.
After the exchange of statements. Sky Sports News Wednesday learned that the ringwalk for the main event will have to start at 1 a.m. if it is to be staged at the iconic venue.
It appears that this desire will now be formally communicated to Khan, with an agreement with other authorities to give the green light.
Alalsikh wants the competition to be accessible to US television viewers and 1 will translate to a UK start stateside at 8pm ET and 5pm PT.
No date has been set for the fight yet, but it is expected to take place in November.
With both former world champions competing in warm-up bouts in late July, a surprise defeat or injury seems the only possible obstacle to their meeting going forward.
Fury faces Mariusz Wach in Thailand on July 24, while Joshua faces Christian Preng a day later in Saudi Arabia.
Speaking at an event in London, Alalsikh said: “I tell you from the start, it depends on whether England gives us what we need, we want a fight here in England.
“But we want time zones around the world, especially in America. If they allow us to be at Wembley late at night, we want to do it in England. It’s about time and audience.
“We will talk to the mayor and (Saudi ambassador) Prince Abdullah (bin Khaled bin Sultan).”
Khan did not comment on whether the fight could be moved later in the evening to accommodate the international audience.
“London is the sporting capital of the world, and the Mayor is working to bring the world’s biggest events to the city,” a spokesman for the Mayor of London said on Tuesday.
“London’s Wembley Stadium has staged some of the biggest boxing events in recent history, with more than 90,000 attending heavyweight bouts including Anthony Joshua vs. Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury vs. Dillian Whyte.
“Sadiq has made it clear that London will be the perfect venue for the long-awaited fight between Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury and the Mayor stands ready to support his ambition to bring the event to our capital as we build a better London for all.”
But after the statement was released, Alalsikh wrote on social media: “Awaiting a positive statement from the Mayor of London about the start time next time Fury vs Joshua is in London, as far as we’ve been told it’s not possible.”
