According to the latest data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), EV sales have increased to Almost one in three new cars were sold in the UK in June., External.
Ian Plummer, chief customer officer of the car-selling website, said the growing demand for EVs is “intensifying competition and increasing consumer interest in plug-in cars.”
However, he said, “with continued uncertainty around policy, incentives and broader external pressures, the broader context remains weak.”
The cost of insurance is one of the most embarrassing concerns for a potential buyer.
“Absolutely, electric vehicles are going to be cheaper to insure,” said Steve Fowler, co-founder of the car review website.
“They are expensive – although not as expensive as some people think – but by making them easier to maintain and cheaper to insure, more people will buy them.”
The issue, it seems, comes from the way many EVs are designed.
“There’s a real focus on reducing weight because electric vehicles are heavy,” said Dan Harwell, chief engineer for Advanced Technologies.
“To save some weight, there are many integrated components. Instead of using patches, they are glued together, which is great for reducing weight, but not good for maintenance, because you have to replace whole systems instead of individual components.”
In a nearby workshop, a new model from a major manufacturer is mounted on a ramp.
This car came in after a relatively minor accident, and Harowell pointed out a few scratches and dents on the battery case underneath the car.
The core of the battery, which contains the cells that power the car, is harmless. But since the whole set is presented as one part, it needs to be completely replaced for complete maintenance.
The battery accounts for about 40% of the total cost of the car, so replacing it is very expensive.
“Damage to the battery is much less common, but its huge cost means any damage, if it involves replacement, risks breaking the vehicle,” he says.
Making it easier to repair batteries would help solve this problem, although industry sources suggest that insurers themselves are resistant to the idea.
The influx of Chinese EV makers into the UK market has also created a few headaches, added Mr Horowell.
The labor rate in China is very low, which means there is little incentive to reduce the amount of work required to repair a car. In Europe, the cost of labor is very high, so the process of repairing a car should be simple.
“We had to work with them to help them really understand our market niche,” he explains.
