Burnham ruled out an early election if he became prime minister, telling an online forum last week that he would “work towards a 2024 manifesto”.
By the end of September, the United Kingdom will have had seven prime ministers in the past decade.
Four prime ministers have won a general election without contesting a mid-term term: Theresa May in 2016, Boris Johnson in 2016, and Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, both in 2022.
Questions have been raised about the legitimacy of each of the opposition parties in power.
But the next prime minister, like his predecessors, There is no obligation to call a general election before the end of parliament in 2029.
The current system is that the electorate votes for their members of parliament and their party, and those members of parliament and that party elect their leader.
The last election was held in 4 July 2024 is when Labor wins a majority, meaning the next election must legally be held in August 2029, although a Prime Minister can choose to call it any time before that.
Whether the Prime Minister calls an early election depends on many factors – the way the party is doing in the elections and whether the Prime Minister wants to ask for new powers from the electorate to set his own agenda in the government.
So while Burnham says there won’t be an immediate election, there could still be one before the end of 2029.
