Messi’s goal against Egypt took his tally to eight at the 2026 World Cup, making him the most goals scored in a single game by a player aged 30 and over at the tournament, surpassing his previous record of seven at the 2022 World Cup, according to statistics network Opta.

Messi alone also scored 8 of the 17 goals scored by all players aged 38 and over in World Cup history, equivalent to 47% of the total goals scored by this age group throughout the tournament’s history.
