Arizona toddler found alive after drowning

A US toddler found unresponsive in an Arizona pool and presumed dead was later found alive in a hospital “cold room,” according to a newly released police report.

The family of the 18-month-old boy panicked when they found him in a pool at a home in the Phoenix area of ​​Gilbert on Feb. 8.

First responders were dispatched and administered life-saving measures before the child was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead an hour later.

According to a police report, officers told Dr. Ariane Tosi, a physician at the hospital, that they saw signs of life. “Please do your thing and let me do mine,” replied the doctor.

“I went to medical school for a reason,” Tosi said, according to the report.

The BBC has contacted Tosi’s lawyer for comment.

Gilbert police arrived at the home around 17:30 MST (00:30 GMT), before the boy was taken to Mercy Gilbert Medical Center and pronounced dead at 18:20.

“If there’s no resistance, I want to call time of death,” Tosi said, according to the police officer’s body camera video obtained by a local NBC News affiliate.

“Time of death 18:20 time of silence,” said the doctor.

A dispatcher from the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office arrived at the hospital five hours later to find the child still breathing.

He was taken to another hospital where he recovered and was released.

The child’s medical records were not included in the police report, leaving uncertainty as to what exactly happened.

Scott Holden, the doctor’s attorney, told The Associated Press that “there is more to this case than has been reported so far, in terms of information and treatment.”

They recommend that the police press charges of neglect against the parents.

According to the police report, investigators said there was an odor of marijuana in the home, which led them to believe the child could have had access to the pool unsupervised.

The Maricopa County Prosecutor’s Office has not yet said whether it intends to file charges.

Mercy Gilbert Medical Center said in a statement that the hospital “conducted a thorough review of all care provided to determine what occurred and make important changes to strengthen care.”

The hospital called it a “heartbreaking situation” and declined to provide any further details.
