The Gold Cup champion goes to a new stage after the World Cup
The Mexican Football Federation has hired the former Barcelona star to lead the national team in the coming period, replacing former coach Javier Aguirre.
Aguirre announced his resignation as coach of the Mexico national team, saying goodbye to the 2026 World Cup in the quarterfinals.After the 2-3 defeat against England.
Shortly after Aguirre’s departure, the Mexican Football Federation announced the appointment of Rafael Marquez as the new coach of the main team in the coming period, as part of a sports project that extends until 2030.
Marquez has had a busy career, especially as a player, with his most famous spell at Barcelona between 2003 and 2010, when he joined from Monaco before heading to New York, and then some stops, ending with Atlas in 2018.
After leaving football, Marquez started coaching. After a year as Atlas Club’s sporting director, he coached Barcelona’s youth team from 2022-2024, before working as Aguirre’s assistant with the Mexico national team from 2024.
Aguirre led Mexico in 37 matches, during which he won 22, drew 9 and lost 6. His players scored 59 goals and conceded 28 goals.
Mexico’s national team produced one of their best performances under Aguirre as they won the 2024-25 CONCACAF Nations League Championship and the 2025 Gold Cup, as well as qualifying for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup.
