Ahead of a meeting of NATO leaders on Wednesday, Trump reiterated his complaint that NATO allies “were not there” in the US war in the Middle East and criticized Britain for initially rejecting a request to use British bases.
Speaking after the summit, Sir Kiir said he believed the alliance was stronger and more united following the summit.
All the leaders addressed the meeting and finally President Trump summed up and said that he was very happy to receive the spirit of the meeting and the unity of the meeting.
“And so in terms of answering the question of what is the outcome here and is NATO coming out of this summit stronger and more united? The answer is yes. And that was our main objective all along.”
Trump described the meeting as a “very successful” meeting and said other NATO members are responding to calls for increased defense funding.
He has repeatedly said he wants NATO members to contribute more to defense spending in Europe and has previously threatened to withdraw troops from Europe.
Alliance members last year agreed to spend 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense and security by 2035.
“Some have really answered the call, others are making big changes, and I think they’re going to answer the call, they’re answering the call on all counts,” Trump said.
