Arsenal’s old deal is about to end… an official move

Arteta’s goal in the Gunners

Brazilian Bruno Guimaraes has dealt a blow to Newcastle United’s management after he officially informed the club of his desire to leave St James’ Park and join Arsenal in the current summer transfer window.

According to “The Athletic“The British Premier League champions have stepped up their efforts to sign the 28-year-old midfielder and are ready to make an offer worth up to £60m.

The paper reported last June that Arsenal had tabled an initial verbal offer worth less than £60m, but Newcastle immediately rejected it, confirming their full commitment to the player’s stay. To date, no official contact has been re-established between the two clubs and the McBays are still sticking to their no-sale stance.

Guimarães’ contract at Newcastle has been extended by a further two years, after he signed a five-year extension in October 2023 that included a £100m temporary release clause that expires in June 2024 without being activated.

Guimaraes’ request comes as Newcastle have already sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3m and Sandro Tonali has left for Tottenham in a deal that could reach £100m, putting Eddie Howe’s management under public pressure if the third star leaves.

Guimarães started for Brazil at the World Cup this summer under Carlo Ancelotti and provided four assists before the tournament was knocked out by Norway in the round of 16.

Guimaraes has long admired Mikel Arteta as he is seen as a ready-made option in the Gunners’ midfield, as he can play alongside or replace Declan Rice, giving Arteta tactical flexibility, especially with the amount of pressure Rice has been under over the past 12 months.
