Ruben Amorim has apologized for not speaking to Manchester United fans since he was sacked in January but says he is “proud” to be their coach.
Amorim has remained silent since leaving Old Trafford and has opted against making any statements about his 14 months at Old Trafford on social media.
The 41-year-old has now ended his break from the game by signing a three-year contract AC Milan.
Amorim was unveiled by the Serie A giants on Wednesday afternoon – but was not asked to speak about his time at United until the final question at a 35-minute media conference.
By then, the former Sporting boss had already admitted he had made some mistakes at United and was hungry to succeed given how his “last adventure” had turned out.
Asked specifically what the mistakes were, Amorim offered a general assessment and said he felt sorry for United fans for not acknowledging them.
“It’s hard to explain the mistakes because I have to explain all the context of the last adventure,” he said.
“I can say that I’ve learned a lot and I’ve made some mistakes.
“I haven’t had the chance – and I’m sorry for that – to say anything to the Manchester United fans at the moment (but) I’m really proud to be their coach for a year.
“It’s a different history now. I could have done more in the last experience. But that’s how it is sometimes. You have to learn to reach a different level. That’s my thinking here.
“Everybody learns from their experiences. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve made some mistakes. I’ll try to change but there are some things you never change. I think I’ll get better. That’s all.”
Ironically, AC Milan will play United in their final pre-season match in Poland on August 15.
Amorim apologized to the Italian media in his briefing for not yet being able to speak their language and gave his answers exclusively in English.
He sat down with owner Gerry Cardinale, who said he wanted to take a hands-on role at the club after a disastrous end to last season, when Milan took just seven points from their last eight games and crashed out of the Champions League.
One of Amorim’s first tasks was to try and convince Luka Modric to stay.
The 40-year-old Croatia captain has an option to extend his contract by another year but has yet to commit.
“Modric is a player we want to keep for his experience,” Amorim said.
“I know the board has spoken to Modric and I have spoken to him twice. If I need to, I will go and take the man.
“He played really well and a key thing for us, especially at the start, is to keep possession.
“I’m not going to say he’s going to play all the games but we really want to count on him next season.”
