Argentina’s players provoked England fans and players during the widespread celebration of their victory over Egypt in the Egyptian Cup final yesterday, Tuesday.
According to the newspaperThe sunThe video showed Argentina’s team celebrating their win over Egypt by singing a song about the Falkland Islands in a sarcastic reference to their arch-rivals England.
Lionel Messi and his team-mates came back from two goals down to win 3-2 in stoppage time amid a refereeing controversy and Egyptian accusations that the tournament was going in favor of Argentina.
But Argentina certainly weren’t worried about the method of victory, and their official social media page posted pictures of them celebrating in the dressing room.
The video was released with English subtitles, and most of the song’s lyrics refer to revenge for the 1994 World Cup.
They say they were robbed 32 years ago in the US when Diego Maradona was banned from the tournament after failing a drug test.
But their singing also referred to the Malvinas, the Argentine word for the Falkland Islands.
Premier League stars such as Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Aston Villa’s Amy Martinez were featured in the video, while Alexis McAllister (Liverpool) and Lisandro Martinez (Manchester United) took part in the win.
Argentina and the United Kingdom fought a bitter war over the Falkland Islands in 1982, resulting in more than 900 deaths and thousands more wounded and captured after 74 days of bloody fighting.
A referendum was held in 2013 in which 99.8% of the population voted to remain under British rule, but tensions remain.
