The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has confirmed the resignation of national team coach Roberto Martinez after Portugal. Spain lost to the last sixteen.
Martinez had previously announced that he would be leaving the role he held From January 2023.
Portugal finished second in their World Cup group, drawing with Colombia and DR Congo and beating Uzbekistan 5-0 before exiting the tournament on Monday, beating Croatia in the last-32.
“The Portuguese Football Federation has announced that it has officially terminated its contractual relationship with the coach of the national team, Roberto Martínez, and his coaching staff this Wednesday,” the FPF said in their statement.
Martinez, 52, led Portugal to the UEFA Nations League title in 2025, but his side exited Euro 2024 at the quarter-final stage with a penalty shoot-out loss to France.
His decision to start Cristiano Ronaldo consistently has come under considerable scrutiny over the past two global tournaments with BBC pundit Chris Sutton. saying that the Spaniard was “attacking” to the 41-year-old forward.
After the 1-0 defeat to Spain, Martinez said: “I came to Portugal with the goal of winning the World Cup and because I didn’t win it doesn’t make sense to continue. My contract expires today.”
The FPF said it had already begun the search for a successor “with the aim of continuing to promote ambition and a winning culture” within the national team set-up.
