Murderer Ruth Ellis from Denbighshire pardoned?

At the time of Ellis’ execution, the British public was questioning whether the death penalty had a place in the 20th century, and two years after her hanging, legal changes were seen as a defense of irresponsibility.

Lammy: “For 70 years, Ruth Ellis’ family fought to have her story heard.

“We cannot change what happened 70 years ago, but we can realize that this is an exception.

“Today’s conditional pardon is an act of mercy. We hope it brings some peace to the Ruth family.”

Ellis’s granddaughter, Laura Enston, said: “Today, justice has finally been served… This apology will not undo what happened 71 years ago, it will not bring back the broken lives – the children left behind, the lost years.

“But formally and ultimately, Ruth should not have been killed. The justice system failed her. This recognition is very important to our family.

“We hope that Ruth’s story will be a lasting reminder that the justice system must take into account the abuse that pushes women to the brink.”
