Thierafurth Inn: Millions in compensation for 1972 UVF gun attack

On Wednesday, Patrick Gribben, one of the wounded, said the shooting still gave him nightmares.

“It’s something you don’t win,” he said after the hearing.

Solicitor Gavin Booth said the settlement represented “proper recognition of the pain and suffering suffered”.

He added that instead of being prosecuted by the law, the killers “were protected by the government and did not go to trial.”

Survivor John McAvoy felt it was “a victory for us”; But, he said, “reparation doesn’t change what happened and it doesn’t change that the perpetrators are still out there.”

Sinn Féin MP Chris Hazard said it was a good day but “I’d rather see justice done and criminals brought to justice”.

It took 11 years to reach a conclusion in the civil case.
