The German doctor was sentenced to prison for killing 15 of his patients


A German anesthesiologist has been sentenced to life in prison for killing 15 of his patients.

The court in Berlin It found the 41-year-old, identified as Johannes M, guilty under German privacy laws of murdering 12 women and three men between September 2021 and July 2024.

Authorities believe these killings may be just the tip of the iceberg. Prosecutors are currently investigating dozens of other incidents involving the doctor.

The victims ranged in age from 25 to 94 years.

Prosecutors said the doctor was administering various lethal drugs without patients’ consent during home visits.

They say that on several occasions he lit fires to cover his tracks.

In the year In July 2024, shortly before his arrest, prosecutors said the doctor killed two patients in one day – a 75-year-old man at his home in central Berlin and a 76-year-old woman a few hours later in a neighboring district.

The doctor tries to burn down the woman’s house but fails.

The doctor said nothing to the many trials that lasted almost a year. But last month he admitted to “killing people” of twelve of his terminally ill patients.

He told the court that he convinced himself that he was doing the right thing by being saved from “suffering and suffering”.

“Overall, I thought this was the best thing for everybody,” he said.

He said he apologized for all the trouble he had caused.

The authorities suspect that he killed more patients. Prosecutors are investigating 76 other cases.

German media said that if further charges are confirmed and he is found guilty, this would be one of the worst serial killings in German history.

The doctor told the court that he would “participate very early in the upcoming trial.”

Earlier in the trial, relatives of the victims told the court that they were still in disbelief.

A 25-year-old young mother who died in 2021 was in tears. “She never said she didn’t want to live anymore,” she said.

In the year The 72-year-old daughter, who died in 2024, said her mother was planning to go to the Baltic Sea with her sister. “My mother wanted to live,” he said.

The court ordered the doctor to remain in protective custody after being sentenced to prison. He was also banned from medical treatment for life.
